I went to a vigil with some friends, which found its way down to the waterfront. We were in a state of shock and sadness. It was wet and cold in Vancouver, much like today, but there were many people gathered there. All the people who spoke at the vigil emphasised the importance of love and of knowledge. I remember well one speaker thanked us all deeply for coming and told us that he could see the light coming from our faces and that this light is called Nur. I was reminded of the Surah An-Nur from the Qur’an, which I first learned about from the work of artist Jamelie Hassan. That night and the next day I listened to the Light Surah many times while thinking of Azzeddine Soufiane, Mamadou Tanou Barry, Khaled Belkacemi, Aboubaker Thabti, Ibrahima Barry and Abdelkrim Hassane. I do the same today.
