I heard later that evening, a notification on my phone before going to bed. I remember feeling the helplessness of watching this too familiar nightmare unfold again and then I reflected on the disbelief that I heard people expressing, that this could happen in Canada. And I remember feeling cynical about that disbelief and I thought of course it could happen here, and actually this violence is always present here in lots of smaller ways. And then I felt helpless again. Remembering this today, one year later, that feeling of helplessness strikes me as an indulgence. Thank you for this space to remember Ibrahima Barry, Mamadou Tanou Barry, Khaled Belkacemi, Aboubaker Thabti, Abdelkrim Hassane, and Azzedine Soufiane.#RememberJan29
